Global Law Firm BCLP Picks Kira Systems For AI Doc Review

Global law firm Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP) has announced today that it has chosen Kira Systems’ AI review technology for its ‘high-volume workstreams’ across the firm.

It’s always good to report on a client win for a legal AI company, but BCLP is a little special as it was the legacy UK arm of the merged firm, BLP, that was one of the first law firms ever to hit the headlines for using legal AI technology – back in 2015……yes…..that long ago….! Seems like ancient history now. But, they truly were one of the first major law firms to really focus on the use NLP and ML technology for unstructured data analysis and extraction – at least among those that were willing to talk openly about it.

At that time it was exploring the extraction of lease and property data using the then independent legal AI company, RAVN, which is now part of iManage. As of 2019, it looks like they’ll be making use of Kira primarily, at least for the higher volume matters and probably more.

The AI company said that its use ‘enables significant time savings and reduces the risk of errors and omissions, as well as freeing up legal teams to focus on providing high-value analysis and advice‘ – and that really hits the nail on the head.

The Toronto-based company said that BCLP ‘already has made progress in embedding the software into its corporate and real estate workflows across its Manchester and St Louis, US, legal service delivery hubs’. It now will begin extending the deployment across all relevant parts of the business, wherever Kira can provide value for clients, they added.

Chief Innovation Officer, Katie DeBord, commented: ‘BCLP has been at the forefront of innovation in the legal sector on both sides of the Atlantic, having been named the world’s most innovative law firm numerous times. We have used a huge number of different tools to meet specific project requirements for many years’

‘As we standardise workflows across BCLP globally, AI due diligence is now at a point where our ability to leverage the technology can deliver substantial benefits for our clients worldwide. Therefore, we have carefully evaluated the market and believe Kira’s platform provides the best solution for our clients. This follows recent enhancements made to its lease abstraction capabilities. Making this commitment will enable us to develop our processes to make best use of the platform and deliver a better solution for clients,’ she added.

While, Co-Founder and CEO of Kira Systems, Noah Waisberg, concluded: ‘We are delighted to be working with BCLP globally. The firm’s strong track record in both real estate – in which it is considered amongst the leading law firms globally – and corporate – where it regularly ranks as amongst the most active advisers in the US market – makes its endorsement of Kira a major win for our platform.’

Congratulations to all involved. Great to see legal AI system usage expanding across the market.
