We need a Senior Manager to join our team who can collaborate with colleagues across the firm to develop solutions that meet business requirements. The Software Solutions Manager manages a team of Software Developers and Analysts and is responsible for analysing software needs across our business, and project managing software development and implementation initiatives.

The Software Team develops manages and maintains the software in use within the Firm, including the core critical applications – the Practice Management System, Document Management System and Case Management System. The Team works on innovative projects to improve efficiency enable new ways of working and provide excellent client service. The role is based in Brodies’ Edinburgh office, with travel to Glasgow and occasionally Aberdeen required.


  • Managing the Software team, comprising 2 x Software Analysts, 4 x Software Developers
  • and 2 x Case Management Developers
  • Project Management of medium to large software projects
  • Managing and prioritising developer resources for the Case Management and Software
  • development pipelines
  • Working closely with the rest of the IT Team to maintain, manage and support the firm’s
  • software estate, in particular database administration and maintenance.
  • Maintaining the current systems, including the planning, testing and implementation of
  • software upgrades
  • Identifying opportunities to improve the firm’s software solutions
  • Working on innovation projects with the wider firm, providing technical input
  • Analysing and identify new software and versions of existing systems that may be of use to the Firm
  • Establish good working relationships with both legal and support departments within the Firm
  • Helping to analyse requirements and design and develop solutions
  • Working closely with and establish good working relationships with third party software and services suppliers
  • Troubleshooting software problems and escalating to the IT Director and/or third party
  • suppliers’ senior management where necessary
  • Updating and maintaining change control logs for major work on the systems
  • Ensuring systems configuration and architecture is documented and that suitable processes
  • are in place to ensure the security and integrity of the software development life cycle
  • Being aware of Brodies’ information security policies, and protect information assets from unauthorised access, disclosure, modification, destruction or interference at all times

  • To be successful in this role, you will be confident managing a team of IT specialists, collaborating with non-technical colleagues, and managing programmes of diverse projects. Most of all you will be able to understand business challenges and translate them into solutions, and to explain technical concepts in plain English
  • You will have great communication skills, both when writing and speaking, and will use them to build relationships with others. You will relish a challenge and be a keen problem solver. As well as solid technical experience of software and systems, you will have an understanding of development and project management methodologies
  • If you hear “why can’t I…?” and “it would be great if…” and are immediately itching to work on a solution, this is the role for you. It would be helpful if you have worked in a legal or professional services environment previously, but not essential


  • Project Management experience and skills; associated qualifications if possible. If you have experience of using project management tools such as Jira that would be very helpful, particularly for Agile development
  • You have a proven track record of managing others, and know how to lead and develop a team and handle people issues
  • You have the ability to translate business requirements into technology solutions
  • You enjoy software analysis and troubleshooting skills
  • You have a good general knowledge of computing hardware and networking
  • You are a confident communicator
  • You’ve used SQL Server a lot, and have administration skills, including using the different versions, writing T-SQL, using maintenance plans, and back-ups if possible
  • A good general knowledge of Microsoft Office Products is needed
  • Knowledge of a Practice Management/Finance System is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of a Document Management System is desirable
  • Knowledge of a Case Management System is desirable
