A new survey by Ari Kaplan and Opus 2 has found that the majority of litigators – mostly at partner level – are now using AI tools for various aspects of case management, with 61% using them at least weekly. That’s good to hear and something we will explore at Legal Innovators UK – on November 6th in London on Litigation Day.
The survey also found that doc analysis was the number one use case, followed by transcript management, then timeline building, and then case strategy. Litigators also noted they were broadly happy with the AI tools, with only 19% of the sample wanting them to be far better.
Overall, a balanced, but positive picture that shows genuine uptake and use of AI tools across a range of needs in the litigation field.
Here’s some more detail on the data.

Use level – 61% were using AI tools at least weekly, which is very good, but only 29% daily. That could perhaps be because many in the sample were partners and hence less likely to be doing quite as much doc analysis work.

Use cases
That doc review / analysis is top is to be expected, but it’s good to see timelines and case strategy getting a decent showing as well. That shows a deeper use of the tools and that lawyers have faith in their outputs.

Implementation
When it came to bringing the tech in – as seen, there’s good progress already – but, even so respondents said that it remained hard to get ‘widespread adoption’. That suggests we may have several ‘power users’ in each firm who really engage with the tools daily, but there is then a long tail of users who are not fully integrating AI into their working day.
Overall, this is a realistic picture that chimes with what AL has seen elsewhere: the AI tools are here now, there are a growing group of regular users, but there is still plenty of work to be done to bring the rest of the firm, or department, along on the legal AI journey. But, we will no doubt see those numbers increase year-on-year as new approaches become normalised.
