NewMod Landfall Launches AI Native Patent Firm

And the NewMods keep on coming. Today’s…yes, today’s, as there are so many now, is Landfall IP, which is ‘an AI native law firm built from the ground up’ for the patent world.

It’s been created by experienced US lawyers Michael Drapkin and Nathan Mutter, and combines ‘legal expertise with an AI-powered platform and integrated drafting system’ – i.e. the core components of a NewMod business:

  1. Experienced lawyers who know their subject matter very well.
  2. The use of AI to act as the leverage.
  3. And that’s it.

Mutter and Drapkin have served as the outside counsel to leading technology companies including Qualcomm, Micron, Coinbase, Oura, Salesforce, and Rubrik, they noted.

The launch comes just one day after Soxton came out of stealth in New York with $2.5m pre-Seed funding – a NewMod created by a former Cooley lawyer, focused on helping startups.

Landfall IP’s launch includes a Discovery Agent, that ‘interviews inventors, structures their ideas, surfaces core inventive concepts, and in real time generates a patentability report’ – which AL has to say sounds very useful.

The tool is available free on a limited basis, and ‘enables founders and early-stage teams to gain early clarity before investing in drafting or filing’, they added.

Meanwhile Landfall’s broader AI-native platform supports ‘drafting, quality analysis, consistency checks, claim to spec alignment, prior art assessment, and internal quality metrics’.

However – and this is key to the NewMod approach – these tools ‘operate under the judgment of senior attorneys, enabling levels of clarity, precision, and turnaround speed that are not possible in traditional workflows’.

In short, yes, lots of AI and automation, but the tech is guided, monitored, overseen and more by lawyers who know their subject. And that is the key thing here. The only thing missing is a large pyramid of legal labour.

Drapkin, Co-Founder of Landfall IP, commented: ‘We set out to build a patent firm that is fundamentally different, not just incrementally better. Innovators deserve a process that is faster, clearer, more strategic, and more predictable. By pairing world class legal expertise with deeply integrated AI systems, we are delivering a step change improvement in both client experience and patent quality.’
