Mary O’Carroll, the well-known legal ops expert who helped create CLOC, has left US law firm Goodwin and joined legal AI startup Sandstone in the role of Product Expert Advisor, but will do this part-time and will still be open to other roles in addition. In the past, there have also been stints at CLM pioneer Ironclad, and Orrick, along with over 13 years at Google.
After around 18 months at Goodwin, O’Carroll will now work closely with Sandstone’s leadership and product teams to ‘shape the platform’s evolution and ensure it meets the needs of modern in-house legal departments’, they said.
And you may then say: top hire, but what does Sandstone do? Well, the New York-based company explained that it functions as a ‘Legal Control Tower’. This control tower allows inhouse teams to connect multiple workflows to business data and needs, and deploy agents that can handle ‘intake, triage, first-pass redlines, and drafting’.
O’Carroll commented: ‘I’ve spent my career transforming how legal departments operate and expanding the impact of the legal operations community. Joining Sandstone as a Product Advisor is a natural extension of that work. Legal is undergoing real change, and I’m excited to help shape a product that gives in-house teams the structure, data, and context they need to lead in this new era.’
Nick Fleisher, CEO and Co-Founder of Sandstone, added: ‘Mary’s impact on the legal ops community cannot be overstated. We strive to partner with the foremost leaders in legal, and Mary brings unparalleled expertise in building scalable, efficient legal departments. Her guidance will be instrumental as we continue to build Sandstone alongside the best legal minds in the industry.’
