LexisNexis is rolling out a united and frictionless agentic offering, which works with its Legal Intelligence Engine harness. This brings together its mass of legal data and AI skills with agentic capabilities that lawyers can command.
The goal is to give lawyers a joined up offering that threads through all that Lexis has to offer, by way of an agentic approach, so that lawyers can ‘simply describe what they want to accomplish, and [it] applies the right AI models – including LexisNexis models that build on years of model optimization expertise – along with appropriate agents, skills, and selected sources behind the scenes’. It will also bring the context of the matter with it, so things don’t get lost, and no need to jump from one system to another.
In short, this is the frictionless experience that taps the very broad and multi-faceted Lexis offering that they’ve been working towards since genAI arrived.
AL spoke to some of the team behind this. Greg Dickason, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, told this site: ‘The Legal Intelligence Engine is an agentic harness. It can call tools and it can [connect to] Shepherd’s [legal data]. It can create output docs, you can add skills to it, you can do end to end workflows.’
He added that just by using a dialogue box you can make choices as to what resources you want to use, the agent will say if it understands the goal, you accept the plan – or modify it, and off it goes.
Jeff Reihl, Technology Chairman at Lexis, added that given that the company now offers so many tools and skills, and data, what this does is bring it all together, ‘it makes it as easy possible to use’ and harnesses what Lexis has on offer. And harness here is used both to refer to leveraging the totality of LexisNexis and the way that the Legal Intelligence Engine surrounds and guides the agentic activity.

In terms of what Lexis can now do, here are some key points:
- ‘Create well-formatted, review-ready Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint outputs from one prompt that initiates multi-step drafting capabilities, with document-aware editing, structured tables, track changes, and suggested next steps.
- Carry context from one step to the next, reducing repeated instructions and helping each task build on the last.
- Use the right models and sources for each task, including LexisNexis models which will be previewed later this year. Lexis+ with Protégé applies the best-fit supported model by default while allowing professionals to select a preferred model. LexisNexis legal sources remain the default and primary grounding source for legal work, with web and customer sources available when selected.
- Verify legal authority within the experience through linked citations and Shepard’s citation intelligence.
- Connect to trusted organizational documents and personal work product as they draft. Professionals can search a connected document management system and select the materials Lexis+ with Protégé should use to draft high-quality work product.
- Apply specialized skills and preferred ways of working. Lexis+ with Protégé can use LexisNexis and ecosystem skills, with customer-created skills and workflows coming soon.’
Is this a big deal?
The short answer is that, yes, this is a big deal. Lexis – as well as other major legal data platforms – have grown out their AI skills very rapidly, while also reinforcing their research capabilities with genAI tools. What is available now is a lot, more than most lawyers would be able to easily navigate without an improved way of getting what they want from the platform.
The Legal Intelligence Engine – acting as a harness for the agentic capabilities in Lexis+ with Protégé – is what makes this move to increased utility possible.
After all, if we leave the word ‘agent’ behind and perhaps not even say ‘AI’, what is this all about but helping lawyers to do what they need to do with all the information and skills within the Lexis ecosystem?
The net result is that it’s now easier to use all that’s on offer and then stay there. Moreover, this holistic system is not about to go on pause, it will keep growing.
