ALSPs without AI…? These days that sounds like toast without avocado. So, it’s good to see Axiom working with AI-powered DraftPilot to provide a contracting solution to clients. Plus, DraftPilot was co-founded by Daniel van Binsbergen of Lexoo fame.
Why is this a big deal? The answer is simple: ALSPs were created to provide an efficient and streamlined way to handle certain types of ‘process’ legal work, e.g. contract review for corporates. But, they focused heavily on the manual labour and even billed by the hour. In short, they became a sort of ‘budget law firm’.
When the first wave of AI came around some dabbled with change, but few really loved what was on offer. Now, with genAI it’s hard for them to ignore it. In fact, if they don’t evolve, then the clients will handle that work internally using AI tools on their own.
So, here we are.
Back to the tech.
DraftPilot was also co-founded by Chris O’Sullivan, also from Lexoo, (which was sold to the Kalexius group last year). The product is designed to be the ‘easiest, most intuitive legal AI solution that seamlessly fits a lawyer’s daily contract review workflow’.
It was also chosen by Axiom after a competitive process that looked at other tools. So kudos to them for winning the pitch.
All well and good. What do they both offer, especially when working together? So DraftPilot offers:
- Accelerated Playbook Creation: DraftPilot can instantly convert existing contract templates into actionable playbooks, ensuring that implementation takes minutes instead of months.
- Real-Time Redline Suggestions: The tool flags potential issues and proposes redlines in a user-friendly side panel, allowing attorneys to review, edit, or accept suggestions within Microsoft Word.
While the newly formed ‘Tech+Talent’ initiative at Axiom aims to identify, vet, and deploy AI tools that meet rigorous standards of accuracy, security, and tangible ROI for clients, they said.
Plus, if you’re wondering how they won the pitch, it was because of this:
‘To become an Axiom-approved AI, DraftPilot turned in winning key performance indicators (KPIs) across five measures established by Axiom’s talent and technology teams:
- A 40-60% average time savings across routine contract review tasks.
- Improved work quality and consistency reported by 89% of attorneys.
- Rapid productivity gains with minimal training requirements.
- Successful use across multiple contract types and languages.
- Enhanced negotiation outcomes through AI-generated redline justifications.

Van Binsbergen commented: ‘Through our years at Lexoo, we saw how time-intensive and repetitive contract review can burden lawyers. By being selected as the first Axiom-approved AI solution, thousands of corporate legal teams worldwide will be able to benefit from AI-enhanced contract review that boosts their overall capacity and frees up attorneys to focus on higher-value strategic work. We believe this is a turning point for in-house teams looking to embrace technology that genuinely delivers.’
And C.J. Saretto, Chief Technology Officer at Axiom, concluded: ‘Our legal talent saw up to 60% time-savings on routine contract tasks, and here’s the kicker: work quality went up. Attorneys using DraftPilot reported that the AI was like having an Associate take the first pass on a contract review—removing tedious tasks and freeing them up to focus on more substantive, strategic negotiations. Our clients can now capitalize on AI-enhanced contract review with DraftPilot, knowing it’s been rigorously field-tested by Axiom attorneys.’
