TR + DeepJudge Form Legal Data Partnership – AL Interview

Thomson Reuters and legal knowledge startup DeepJudge have formed a legal data partnership. AL spoke to TR’s Rawia Ashraf and DeepJudge’s CEO, Paulina Grnarova, about the significant development. The companies added that this is not the first step toward an M&A deal.

So, what have they done? By integrating DeepJudge’s AI knowledge platform into CoCounsel Legal, Thomson Reuters will ‘give legal teams a 360-degree view that unifies internal firm know-how and exclusive Thomson Reuters content’ the companies explained. It will come as a premium option to Thomson Reuters’ CoCounsel Legal package, they added.

AL Interview with Rawia Ashraf, Head of Product, CoCounsel (RA), and DeepJudge’s CEO, Paulina Grnarova (PG)

How does this go beyond what a user could get who is a customer of both companies already and uses them independently?

RA – Thomson Reuters is integrating DeepJudge directly into CoCounsel Legal so legal teams can search their firm’s internal knowledge alongside Thomson Reuters trusted content in one place.

DeepJudge builds a unified index across sources like iManage, NetDocs, SharePoint, HighQ, and more, and CoCounsel Legal presents that firm knowledge together with Westlaw and Practical Law content. This integration enables the CoCounsel agent to have access to all the data it needs to take action, making the combined experience more powerful than buying two separate tools and using them apart.

Users get a single, secure environment to find firm precedents, client documents, and internal know-how at the same time as authoritative Thomson Reuters content. This enables the CoCounsel agent to have access to all the data it needs to take action, adding depth, relevance, and speed to legal research and drafting inside CoCounsel Legal, with existing permissions respected.

PG – Every firm working on their AI strategy is realizing that fast, efficient access to the right information is the foundation for empowering users — and for making any AI workflows or agents truly effective. Context is everything.

DeepJudge indexes and enriches everything within a firm’s internal systems — documents, emails, matters, experience data — and makes that knowledge instantly accessible. By connecting that foundation to CoCounsel Legal, lawyers will be able to use their own firm’s precedents and insights together with trusted sources like Westlaw and Practical Law, having the complete 360° view. It ultimately helps lawyers start every task with the right foundation, accelerate their workflows, and unlock new insights and efficiencies that weren’t possible before.

We’re very excited for this partnership and the value it’s bringing to our joint customers.

Can DeepJudge be applied to TR’s own data? E.g. its case law and Practical Law data, for example?

RA – DeepJudge indexes a customer’s internal data. CoCounsel Legal continues to deliver Thomson Reuters proprietary content such as Westlaw and Practical Law. The integration lets professionals see internal knowledge and Thomson Reuters content together in one search and one drafting experience.

PG – DeepJudge searches a firm’s internal content, finds relevant results, and surfaces them alongside TR content such as Practical Law. The first place we’re doing this is in CoCounsel Drafting. This integration is designed so lawyers can draft with full confidence, combining DeepJudge’s ability to surface firm-specific precedents, client data, and internal knowledge with CoCounsel Legal’s trusted content.

As part of the partnership, we’re committed to exploring the best ways to integrate our products. Customers guide our roadmap, and we’ll continue building deeper integrations over time to bring even more value to joint users.

Is this also about new marketing strategies? E.g. selling DeepJudge to TR’s customers as an add-on?

RA –
Customers can contact their account representative for details. In most cases, customers can subscribe to Thomson Reuters and DeepJudge solutions on one single contract. There’s no need to go through additional vendor onboarding, and procurement and billing are streamlined because Thomson Reuters invoices you for all products.

PG – The partnership really came to fruition because customers were asking for it, and honestly, it just makes sense to have legal questions answered in this 360° unified view.

And finally for TR, is this the pre-cursor to an M&A deal?

RA – No. This is a strategic partnership. Thomson Reuters is building the AI infrastructure behind professional work and partners with leading technology providers to give customers choice and professional-grade innovation. DeepJudge joins an ecosystem that includes companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft.

Thank you to both and congratulations on the partnership.
