Clio Launches EDGAR-Based Corporate Research Tool

Clio has made a new move in the Big Law legal space with the launch of a new tool within its Vincent AI capability that enables legal teams to explore SEC corporate filings within EDGAR and apply a range of LLM-based skills.

EDGAR, the ‘Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval’ system, is the primary repository for listed companies to submit documents to the SEC. It ‘processes about 4,700 filings per day, serves up 3,000 terabytes of data to the public annually, and accommodates 40,000 new filers per year on average’. In short, it’s a massive database and packed with useful information for law firms.

With the new Vincent capability ‘lawyers can now ask natural language questions across more than 30 years of corporate disclosures and legal agreements and receive structured, source-grounded answers in seconds’, they said.

‘Instead of reviewing filings individually, teams can search and synthesize across the full body of SEC content, transforming how filing research gets done. Because this capability is natively integrated within Vincent, legal teams can move seamlessly from research to analysis to drafting in a single environment, keeping insights connected to the broader context of their work,’ they added.

One challenge with EDGAR has been that it is simply so large, and on its own it is not always great at finding the details that you need. So, this is very handy.

Clio underlined that with Vincent your EDGAR searches can now also ‘surface key risk factors and financial metrics, and compare disclosures across companies and industries. They can also analyze how specific terms and provisions are used across comparable transactions’.

Plus, every response is grounded in the underlying filings, to prevent hallucinations.

In short they’re really applying what genAI can do across the EDGAR library of data.

And this is important strategically to Clio as it continues to expand into the Big Law side of the market, with transactional research into listed companies a clear area of importance to major law firms.

Dan Hoadley, Senior Director of Product at Clio, commented: ‘For many transactional attorneys and corporate legal teams, filing research has been one of the most time-intensive parts of their day. Now, you can go from a question to a grounded answer and immediately apply that insight in your work.’
