Soren, which is backed by Y Combinator, has launched what it calls ‘private AI’ aimed at regulated sectors that deal with highly sensitive information. They specifically name lawyers as one of their target markets.
So, we’ve heard the idea of ‘on prem AI’ before, what is this?
Co-founder, Kevin Xie, explained in a statement: ‘Soren develops private AI for regulated industries. We deploy models on their infrastructure, fine-tune them on their data, and govern them according to their constraints.
‘[Then] on top of this foundation, we build targeted automations that integrate directly into existing systems, augmenting the tools teams already use.’
I.e. they are not making their own LLMs here, what they do is allow you – or your clients – to use a genAI system via Soren, which sits on top of your tech stack.
Banks in particular would find this useful, and security remains a subject that keeps surfacing when it comes to the most sensitive legal AI use cases.
He added: ‘Over the past few months, we’ve partnered with a select group of institutions to bring these systems into production. Already, these teams are saving hours of work across their most sensitive data and highest-stakes workflows.’

The company noted that:
- ‘Your models, data, and infrastructure stay in environments you control, like your cloud tenant, your VPC, or on-premise. Nothing leaves your perimeter, and no third party trains on your data.
- We design against the regulations you already operate under, including frameworks like HIPAA, SOC 2, GLBA, and ISO 27001, as well as client-specific requirements. Every engagement begins with a data map, and access is scoped, logged, and auditable end to end.
- We handle the design, deployment, and ongoing operation, and we hand off documentation and training at whatever level of involvement your team prefers.’
Interesting move, and while many users of legal AI tools are OK with the security available, it is indeed true that some clients – for super-sensitive matters – are still looking for a solution that meets their needs. So, this may have legs. We shall see.
