Clio has hired Bridget Mary McCormack, a former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice, and most recently CEO of the American Arbitration Association (AAA), where she spearheaded a drive toward legal AI adoption.
She will join the legal tech company as General Manager, Judiciary, strengthening the leadership team behind Clio’s expansion into the courts, they said.
The move follows swiftly on from the hire of Pablo Arredondo as Senior Vice President, Judiciary, who is the former co-founder of Casetext, which was bought by Thomson Reuters.
Both moves are part of an increased focus on ‘growth across courts, judicial officers, and dispute resolution organizational partners’. To which end they noted that ‘Clio enters the courts with significant scale and a broad legal foundation. Its acquisition of vLex added authoritative research, case law, dockets, and court records to a platform used by more than 400,000 legal professionals in over 130 countries.’
Jack Newton, CEO and Founder of Clio, commented: ‘The judiciary represents one of the largest opportunities to strengthen how the legal system works, and we are building for it with long term ambition.
‘Bridget understands this market at a level very few people do. She has led courts, worked across the justice system, and knows what it takes to earn the confidence of the institutions we want to serve. This is part of a much bigger vision for Clio to help shape the infrastructure of modern legal work, across the profession and the institutions that support it.’
McCormack concluded: ‘Millions of people rely on courts at moments when the stakes are highest, often without meaningful legal support. The opportunity now is to give those institutions better tools to meet that responsibility. If we do this well, the impact won’t be about efficiency. It will be the strengthening of the public justice system’s service to the people who depend on it, and the corresponding growth in public trust.’
Is this a big deal?
Well, it’s not every day you hire a former judge – or the head of the AAA, so this is indeed a big move. And as noted above, Clio is set on expanding into the judiciary field, so the new hire and that of Arredondo are significant steps towards accomplishing this goal.
