Alongside the launch of Astra for Law, OpenAI has also announced that there are already 26 ‘partner-built plugins’ (see full list below), that help lawyers ‘go deeper with the tools and knowledge they already use’ – and as far as AL sees it, this increases the ‘centrality’ of the Astra context for lawyers.
OpenAI commented: ‘These plugins cover the practice and business of law. With iManage, a lawyer can draft a negotiation brief in ChatGPT and save it to the matter file; Intapp can surface activities that may need a time entry for review; DeepJudge can bring prior deals into a comparison. Thomson Reuters is bringing HighQ matter context into ChatGPT and previewing a forthcoming CoCounsel Legal connector.’
They also added: ‘Using developer mode, you can build custom private plugins that connect proprietary data and tools to ChatGPT, or add MCP-based plugins from other sources. Private plugins can be built using the Apps SDK.’
As noted above all of this means that once you move your work into Astra, you will find it easier to stay there.
Plus, special kudos to LegalQuants for being part of this from launch!
One key additional point is legal research.
OpenAI said that: ‘By using the legal search index, Astra for Law can search US case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions across a corpus of more than 230 million URLs, with sources added daily.
‘Our work with Free Law Project, the nonprofit behind CourtListener, brings its case-law collection covering more than 99.9% of published US precedential case law into this research experience.’
And that’s a big deal just on its own. Now, will this be ‘as good as’ Lexis and TR? We shall see, but OpenAI is very bullish about what it’s able to achieve.
So, when you add in all that Astra for Law can do, then add in the plug ins – plus the ability to develop your own, it’s really a massive platform. More on this shortly.
