‘Zero Associates’ Firm Pierson Ferdinand Hits 300 Partners

Pierson Ferdinand, a new model law firm that has no associates and instead relies of AI platforms such as Harvey to do the heavy lifting, has now reached 300 partners globally.

PierFerd, as it’s known, said that the 300 total has been hit ‘less than three years after launching in January 2024’.

They added that the firm has a ‘deliberate strategy’ of bringing aboard top lawyers worldwide. Plus, they also handle all the Big Law work areas you’d expect: commercial litigation, real estate, cross-border transactions, executive compensation, and more.

In a Harvey blog post, PierFerd noted: ‘Most firms run on leverage: armies of associates stacked beneath partners. Pierson Ferdinand flipped that model on its head. It is a partner-only firm, with no associates and no junior training, by design.

‘As clients increasingly seek efficiency, value, and more direct engagement with experienced counsel, the firm’s model offered a different approach. That bold structure raised an equally bold question: how do experienced partners absorb the work juniors traditionally handle, without sacrificing speed, margin, or quality?

‘In place of junior staff, we use AI to largely replace the tasks that would have ordinarily been performed by more junior lawyers.’

Is this a big deal?

Well, there are other ‘firms’ out there that are mostly senior lawyers, for example Gunnercooke. Often the difference between such ‘distributed’ firms are the intricacies of their internal structure and profit share systems. And in Gunnercooke’s case, they have brought aboard AI platform Legora, which now is used widely by the lawyers there.

However, PierFerd stands out primarily because it’s so intentionally focused on using AI to replace associate labour. I.e. this is a new model law firm by design, even if it also has characteristics of the type of distributed law firm that we have seen before in the market. So, AL is classifying this as a ‘new model’ law firm, even if it’s a bit different to Crosby or General Legal, for example.

The growth also tells us that there are a lot of good lawyers out there who no longer want to be part of a traditional Big Law highly-leveraged business model – but also perhaps don’t want to go out totally on their own, or operate without the tech backing needed to handle the inevitable volumes of more mundane work that are part and parcel of commercial legal matters. PierFerd thus provides a foundation for those lawyers who want to be in ‘a firm’, but one that is very different to where they worked before.
