Legal AI platform August has launched Products, a new feature that helps law firms turn their legal services into…well….products. The idea often has been tried before, but August is taking it to a new level with its agents doing much of the work by tapping a law firm’s playbooks and templates – with a lawyer in the loop to check things before ‘the product’ goes to the clients.
Now, as mentioned, law firms have been exploring the productization approach for some time – e.g. one can go all the way back to Allen & Overy’s AOSphere using rules-based systems and doc automation more than a decade ago. But, genAI and agents can really empower such an approach even further.
It’s also a nice way for firms to make some money from more mundane legal needs. As they say: ‘A service [is] built once [and then] becomes a source of recurring revenue.’
And as one would expect, such productized services would normally be provided on a fixed fee.

Riyaan Bakhda, a founding engineer at August who built August Products, commented: ‘Law firms can now earn recurring revenue from their expertise, the way software companies do from their products.
‘A firm decides what to sell, and August’s orchestration layer builds the whole application automatically and connects it to the firm’s own agents, which work from the firm’s precedents and playbooks.’
Plus, in terms of how the agents work, the company added that ‘when a lawyer corrects an agent’s work, August can save the correction as a skill that the firm’s agents reuse on the next matter, so the agents improve as the lawyers use them’.
Let’s give one happy customer the last word. David Fischl, a partner at Hicksons in Australia, commented: ‘The agents work from our precedents created by our expert lawyers for each client. We decide where a lawyer signs off. What comes out is recognisably Hicksons work, delivered with fixed price certainty for our clients.’
