Spellbook, the contract AI pioneer for the LLM generation, has hired Jean-Michel Lemieux, who has quite an amazing CV. Past roles include CTO of Shopify (left in 2021), VP Engineering at Atlassian, and before that roles at IBM and HP. Since leaving Shopify he’s been enjoying the fruits of his career with a restaurant and a racing catamaran. Kudos to him! He also is an investor and has been an advisor to Spellbook for the past year.
But, now he’s back to a more regular existence, this time in the world of legal tech. So, what is in store for him?
Well, he will have a very broad role at Canada-based Spellbook and has taken on the exotic title of ‘Executive Individual Contributor’ – which is a little bit like what Artificial Lawyer’s founder is as well perhaps – so this site can relate, (although without the restaurant or cool boat).
As the company explained: ‘[We are] embedding an experienced technical leader directly into the company’s most challenging projects. Unlike traditional executive roles confined to a single department, the EIC functions as a high-leverage operator working across product, engineering, go-to-market, and internal systems for the AI-native enterprise.’
Scott Stevenson, CEO of Spellbook, added that the new role – and new type of job – is necessary because ‘the old model was optimized around managing functions, but AI collapses those boundaries [inside a company].
‘Speed now comes from how well the company moves as one. Jean-Michel is building the AI-first operating system for our company, applying his technical expertise and leadership across every part of the business, so we move as fast and precisely as our product.’
Lemieux commented: ‘Contracts are the APIs of the real world – every transaction runs on them – so by making legal workflows frictionless, Spellbook is accelerating the agreements that underpin the global economy.
‘I’m joining this exceptional team full-time to help accelerate execution across the entire company, from code and product to operations and strategy.’
Spellbook is backed by investors including Khosla Ventures, Thomson Reuters Ventures, Inovia Capital, The Legaltech Fund, Bling Capital, and Moxxie Ventures.
